"Trainwreck" - An Outdoor Gallery showcasing Mountain Graffiti
Trainwreck is a little gem for the folks in Function - mostly visited by local Mt Bikers. It is the site of a train crash that occurred in the 60s. The trail weaves through the forest into the remaining railway cars. The twisted metal graveyard lays next to the Cheakamous River a few km south of Function.
The wreck is not what you would expect to find in the middle of a forest in the middle of nowhere. All the wrecked wagons have been used as canvas by some very talented local Graffiti artists. I know some are Pepe a.k.a. Skullboy, Chili Tom, Randy Randoid but I am not sure who the other artists are.
In addition there is an amazing Bike park (black diamond for sure)with a lot of the features built on top and around of the old wagons. It is easy to get there from either highway or Function but the "park" itself is for expert riders.
I hiked there with my dog Millar and spent about four hours in the forest and the rain taking photos of the art on display in this unique outdoor art gallery. However, some of the crowds that have spent time there have left behind a bit of garbage. Nothing major.
This is a place that still is free from the fangs and bylaws of the R.M.O.W and thus has all the character and punkness of the real Whistler. You must visit before it becomes politically correct, clean and becomes part of the valley trail.
Here are the photos I took today.
